AC Repair & Replacement

The first step towards deciding between AC repair and replacement is determining the force and amount of air that needs to be in circulation in order to achieve balanced temperature distribution throughout each room of your home. This knowledge helps us to understand if your current system is meeting the needs of your space and, if not, it will help direct us to the best system to bring into your home. One of our Charlotte air conditioning repair specialists will explain how and why the new system we are recommending will work better for you.

Full disclaimer: We offer free diagnostics if you choose us for your A/C repair on the day! Otherwise there is a diagnostic fee of $75 for evaluating the entire system and its malfunctions.

    Air Cleaning Ionization

At Carolina Copper HVAC, a large component of how we feel we can better the lives of our customers is through bettering the air quality in their homes.

    Understanding the Science

Air is made of invisible particles called atoms, which either have a positive or negative charge. Positive ions are harmful to the human body, whereas negative ions are beneficial. The highest concentrations of negative ions are found in the clean air of nature, such as in mountains and forests.

Science has shown that negative ions contribute to overall well-being through:

    • Purifying the blood
    • Stimulating cell metabolism
    • Enhancing the immune system
    • Balancing the nervous system
    • Promoting deep sleep
    • Aiding in healthy digestion

    Implications for Those with Allergies

Perhaps the most important health benefit of negative ions is that they help to purify the air in your home through clearing away airborne allergens such as pollen, mold spores, bacteria, and viruses. They also decrease particulate matter in the air such as dust, pet dander, and cigarette smoke. This is made possible when the negative ions attach themselves to positive particles and change their charge.

When this happens, the viruses, bacteria, or other matter becomes too heavy to remain airborne. Instead of these harmful forces entering your breathing passage and making you fall sick, the negative ions in the air form a protective barrier around you.

The Why, What, and How to Better Indoor Air Quality”

    The Why

We all have thought about solutions for improving the quality of our water, food, or home decor but what about our air? Our home's indoor air quality is one of the most, if not the single most, important dynamics of our life. According to the EPA, we spend 87% of our life indoors with the majority of that being our home. Are we breathing byproduct air from bathrooms, bedrooms, garages, things we've cooked or chemically cleaned months ago? The short answer, yes.

    The What

Our indoor air quality determining device will sample air from a centralized location inside of your home and measure

    1. Particulate Matter (PM2.5 and PM10): Particulate matter less than 2.5 and 10 microns. These particles infiltrate your lungs the easiest and cause some of the most damage due to their incredibly small size and chemical make up.
    2. Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC’s): A large group of chemicals that are found in many products we use to build and maintain our homes. Once these chemicals are in our homes, they are released or “off-gas” into the indoor air we breathe. They may or may not be able to be smelled, and smelling is not a good indicator of health risk. VOC's can cause nose and throat irritation, headaches, nausea/vomiting, dizziness, or worsening of asthma symptoms
    3. Carbon Dioxide (CO2): An odorless, colorless gas that is all around us caused by our bodies, kitchens, crawlspaces, smoke inside homes, and closed doors. We breathe it in every day with no harmful effects. However, in large enough quantities, around 1000 ppm, CO2 can reduce your concentration and focus. At higher levels, about 2500 ppm, CO2 can make you sleepy and tired, slow down your brain, and even give you a slight headache. Exposure to levels greater than 5000 ppm can be dangerous to your health.
    4. Temperature: The sensible warm or cold air that you feel inside your home. We typically think of our HVAC system as the primary source of controlling our home's inside temperature but studies show that building quality, tightness, and indoor air quality is of equal importance.
    5. Relative Humidity: The amount of water vapor your home's air is holding versus what it can hold. In other words, how humid your air feels. High levels of RH can cause extreme discomfort, excessive amounts of water condensation in walls, ceilings, and any other colder surfaces, and the perfect breeding ground for microbial, bacterial, and fungal growth.
    6. Dew Point: The temperature that your home's air needs to be lowered to in order to condense into water droplets. This measurement is critical in indoor air quality because it can determine if your ducts, vents, windows, or any other surface that doesn't retain heat well will sweat and create an environment for microbial or fungal growth. Loose ducts, vents, ceiling lights, or any other penetration that allows attic, crawlspace, or outdoor air into your home will cause those surfaces to reach dew point and condense water vapor into liquid.
    7. Building Pressure: Your home's air eventually makes it way outdoors to return from where it came from. When that air moves outside through windows, doors, cracks, sockets, etc, it has to be replaced with more air. So, it is in our best interest to determine if too much air is being pushed outside of your home or too much air is being pulled inside of your home. This will determine if we are exhausting gas fumes and byproducts safely, keeping gas fumes and other harmful gases from entering your home, keeping humid or dry outdoor air from entering your home, and ensuring your duct system and pressure within it is safe for your HVAC system. Building or home pressure is measured in inches of water column. 27 inches of water column is equal to about 1 PSI (pounds per square inch). In other words, it is a very small amount of pressure that is used often in home performance and helps determine if your home is undergoing negative or positive pressure.

    The How

Our device and software will populate a report based on your home's IAQ Smart Test results that shows the most negative aspects of your air. From there, our software will determine what method and or product will improve your home's indoor air quality greatly. Methods and products that out test could populate as solutions to better indoor air could be sealing your ducts, sealing attic and crawlspace penetrations, installing germicidal UV bulbs to fight microbial growth, installing fresh air intakes to decrease carbon dioxide levels, or installing a whole home air purification system.

    Ventilation Services

We provide a range of ventilation services to help clean air circulate in your home. These include:

Dryer vent cleanings and ventilation to outdoors

Dryer vents can become compacted with lint, debris, and even birds! Being compacted makes the dryer turn off due to not being able to breathe fully which typically looks like a “not enough airflow” alarm. We have seen many customers have to replace dryer components due to overheating because the dryer vent was clogged. Having it cleaned once a year ensures better drying, safety, and dryer longevity.

    Range hood ventilation to outdoors

Range hoods provide the ultimate modern look for your kitchen. Not only does the stainless steel color make your kitchen look more appealing, but the added ventilation to outdoors helps control and decrease lingering odors, steam, and other cooking by-products that ultimately decrease indoor air quality. As long as you have the cabinet space, even with a microwave in place, we have the ability to install one.

    Cooktop ventilation to outdoors

Looking to upgrade your cooktop or range? Cooktops and ranges aren’t typically known for being able to ventilate outdoors, however, there are plenty of models that can! By using downdraft ventilation, cooktops and range hoods with this capability pull the cooking by-products down through a ventilation pipe, into your crawlspace, and outside the foundation wall. There are even units that can be added onto existing cooktops and ranges, without ventilation capabilities, that have linear motion by pushing a button and use the same downdraft ventilation technology.

    Microwave ventilation to outdoors

Most microwaves have the ability to ventilate outdoors. However, the most common installation of these is installed in re-circulate mode which doesn’t filter out smells all that great. By simply having the model number of your microwave, we can provide and install the necessary manufacturer’s parts and ventilation pipe to upgrade your microwave to a fully ventilating microwave/range hood.

    Fresh air ventilation

Installation of fresh air intakes, energy recovery ventilators and heat recovery ventilators. If you are experiencing stuffy noses, allergies, viruses, or overall poor health, it could be a result of your indoor air quality in your home. It's important to remember that every molecule of air you breathe in your home passes through your HVAC system so when that molecule is returned after cycling through, it is either better or worse than before.

    Ductwork Services

Poorly installed or worn-down ductwork can be costing you more money than necessary. Proper air duct installation and sealing follow-ups help reduce wasted energy and allow you to enjoy the benefits of an HVAC system working at its full potential.

What issues could be impacting my system?

Some common problems with ductwork include:

Leaks: When the air that has already been heated or cooled leaks into attics, basements, or crawl spaces and diminishes overall efficiency by up to 40%.

Poorly insulated ducts: This puts a great deal of unnecessary strain on your HVAC system, especially in the height of winter cold or summer heat.

Imbalances: When the amount of air delivered through supply ducts doesn’t match the amount of air drawn in through return ducts and creates patchy areas that are too hot or too cold.

Safety: Pressure imbalances caused by leakage can lead to a heightened risk of exposure to carbon monoxide.

    Home Performance Services

We provide a range of other services to help keep your home in good shape.

Scroll down to see our home performance services below!

    Attic insulation repair

Attic insulation is one of the most important elements that determines your home’s ability to stay comfortable. In the summer, attic temperatures can reach 150+, and sub-zero in the winter. During this time, heat is constantly trying to enter your home in the summer and exit it in the winter. We offer blown-in or batt type insulation repairs to any torn, old, or non-insulated areas of your attic with R values from 13-20.

    Attic access tent

Attic access tents are critical in stopping heat from entering in summer and exiting in winter. With this, we’ve seen customers experience lower power bills, better comfort in hallways, and overall improvements in home performance. We install attic tents that are easy to remove and put back when attic access is needed.

Crawl space insulation repair or upgrade

Crawl space insulation is also considered one of the most important elements in keeping your home comfortable and healthy. Southeastern humidity is always a battle with crawlspaces and making sure your crawl space insulation is dry and has a high R-value (resistance to heat) is critical in making sure your home is comfy and healthy. We offer repair or upgrade services for crawl space insulation batts all the way up to R-20.

    Crawl space vapor barrier repair

Vapor barriers prevent moisture intrusion into your home. High humidity (outside) moves to low humidity (inside) and having a proper vapor barrier battles that and keeps your home healthy. Left unnoticed, crawlspaces can provide a highway for bacteria, odor, and moisture to enter your home and cause unhealthy living conditions. We offer vapor barrier repair and heavy-duty replacement options to help you and your family stay healthy.
