Indoor Air Quality Facts

AIR IS FLUID JUST LIKE WATER

We all have thought about solutions for improving the quality of our water, food, or home decor but what about our air? Our home's indoor air quality is one of the most, if not the single most, important dynamics of our life. According to the EPA, we spend 87% of our life indoors with the majority of that being our home. Are we breathing byproduct air from bathrooms, bedrooms, garages, things we've cooked or chemically cleaned months ago? The short answer, yes.

INDOOR AIR NEEDS TO BE CLEANED

Did you know that a large percentage of Americans spend as much as 90% of their day inside? Because of this, it's important to ensure that the indoor air quality in your home is clean and healthy. Air pollutants and allergens, be gone! At Carolina Copper HVAC, a large component of how we feel we can better the lives of our customers in Charlotte, NC and the surrounding areas is through bettering the air quality in their homes. We offer more than just heating and air services.

INDOOR AIR QUALITY IMPACTS THE BODY

Air is made of invisible particles called atoms, which either have a positive or negative charge. Positive ions are harmful to the human body, whereas negative ions are beneficial. The highest concentrations of negative ions are found in the clean air of nature, such as in mountains and forests.

Science has shown that negative ions contribute to overall well-being through:

  1. Purifying the blood
  2. Stimulating cell metabolism
  3. Enhancing the immune system
  4. Balancing the nervous system
  5. Promoting deep sleep
  6. Aiding in healthy digestion

WHAT AIR PURIFIERS ACCOMPLISH

Perhaps the most important health benefit of negative ions is that they help to purify the air in your home through clearing away airborne allergens such as pollen, mold spores, bacteria, and viruses. They also decrease particulate matter in the air such as dust, pet dander, and cigarette smoke. This is made possible when the negative ions attach themselves to positive particles and change their charge. When this happens, the viruses, bacteria, or other matter becomes too heavy to remain airborne. Instead of these harmful forces entering your breathing passage and making you fall sick, the negative ions in the air form a protective barrier around you.

contributors of poor indoor air quality

  • Particulate Matter (PM2.5 and PM10): Particulate matter less than 2.5 and 10 microns. These particles infiltrate your lungs the easiest and cause some of the most damage due to their incredibly small size and chemical make up.

  • Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC’s): A large group of chemicals that are found in many products we use to build and maintain our homes. Once these chemicals are in our homes, they are released or “off-gas” into the indoor air we breathe. They may or may not be able to be smelled, and smelling is not a good indicator of health risk. VOC's can cause nose and throat irritation, headaches, nausea/vomiting, dizziness, or worsening of asthma symptoms

  • Carbon Dioxide (CO2): An odorless, colorless gas that is all around us caused by our bodies, kitchens, crawlspaces, smoke inside homes, and closed doors. We breathe it in every day with no harmful effects. However, in large enough quantities, around 1000 ppm, CO2 can reduce your concentration and focus. At higher levels, about 2500 ppm, CO2 can make you sleepy and tired, slow down your brain, and even give you a slight headache. Exposure to levels greater than 5000 ppm can be dangerous to your health.

  • Temperature: The sensible warm or cold air that you feel inside your home. We typically think of our HVAC system as the primary source of controlling our home's inside temperature but studies show that building quality, tightness, and indoor air quality is of equal importance.

  • Relative Humidity: The amount of water vapor your home's air is holding versus what it can hold. In other words, how humid your air feels. High levels of RH can cause extreme discomfort, excessive amounts of water condensation in walls, ceilings, and any other colder surfaces, and the perfect breeding ground for microbial, bacterial, and fungal growth.

  • Dew Point: The temperature that your home's air needs to be lowered to in order to condense into water droplets. This measurement is critical in indoor air quality because it can determine if your ducts, vents, windows, or any other surface that doesn't retain heat well will sweat and create an environment for microbial or fungal growth. Loose ducts, vents, ceiling lights, or any other penetration that allows attic, crawlspace, or outdoor air into your home will cause those surfaces to reach dew point and condense water vapor into liquid.

  • House Pressure: Your home's air eventually makes it way outdoors to return from where it came from. When that air moves outside through windows, doors, cracks, sockets, etc, it has to be replaced with more air. So, it is in our best interest to determine if too much air is being pushed outside of your home or too much air is being pulled inside of your home. This will determine if we are exhausting gas fumes and byproducts safely, keeping gas fumes and other harmful gases from entering your home, keeping humid or dry outdoor air from entering your home, and ensuring your duct system and pressure within it is safe for your HVAC system. Building or home pressure is measured in inches of water column. 27 inches of water column is equal to about 1 PSI (pounds per square inch). In other words, it is a very small amount of pressure that is used often in home performance and helps determine if your home is undergoing negative or positive pressure.

Fresh air intakes and ventilation fans are also a great way to improve indoor air quality.
